“The Ministry of the Word” vs “Receiving the Burden”
Isaiah 13:1 The revelation
concerning Babylon received by Isaiah son of Amoz:
Matthew 7:28 After Jesus had
finished speaking these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching;
Matthew 7:29 for he taught
them as an authority, not as their scribes.
Acts 6:4 But let us
steadfastly and persistently pray and fulfill the ministry of the Word.
1 Peter 4:11 If anyone speaks,
let him speak the decree of God; if anyone serves, let him serve with the
strength that God provides, so that in all things God may be glorified through
Jesus Christ. To him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen.
Luke 19:41 When Jesus
approached and saw the city, he wept for her, saying,
2 Corinthians 11:28 Besides things that have not been mentioned, my daily weight is on me the anxiety for all the churches.

Item |
The Ministry of the Word |
Receiving the Burden |
|
Meaning |
To speak for
God, speak forth God, and minister God into people |
To receive
before God a responsibility and commission concerning people, the church,
and spiritual conditions |
|
Core Definition |
Not merely preaching, but God
speaking through man |
Not merely having a feeling, but
having an inward compulsion that cannot be laid aside |
|
Cause |
God desires to
dispense His present speaking through man |
God sees man’s
need and seeks those willing to bear it |
|
Spiritual Source |
Revelation and speaking from the Holy Spirit |
The inward
pressing and urging of the Holy Spirit |
|
Metaphor |
A channel, an
outlet, a trumpet blower |
Carrying a
heavy load, pregnancy, doing business, parents bearing children |
|
Explanation |
A genuine
pulpit is not
merely knowledge, structure, or skill |
Genuine service
is not
merely fulfilling duty, but achieving spiritual results |
|
Focus |
What God wants
to say today |
What God wants
to gain in people today |
|
Not |
Not eloquence,
inspiration, or organization |
Not routine work or
outward responsibility |
|
But Rather |
God speaking
presently through man |
Bearing God’s
feeling concerning people |
|
Effect |
Enlightens,
supplies,
and turns people |
Stirs,
convicts, and transforms people |
|
Purpose |
To minister
life and build up the church |
To accomplish
God’s goal in man |
|
Remedy |
Seek the Lord
for His present speaking |
Be pressed by
God and
receive His burden |
|
True Measurement |
Whether God
truly speaks |
Whether spiritual
results are produced |
|
Wrong Condition |
Much doctrine but little
power |
Much activity but little
urgency |
|
Fallen Condition |
Sermon-centered
Christianity |
Duty-centered service |
|
Danger |
People admire messages
without change |
Service becoming
mechanical and lifeless |
|
Effect on People |
May move people
emotionally |
Causes people
to become inwardly unsettled before God |
|
Requirement for the Speaker |
Must know the
condition of the people |
Must first be
dealt with by God |
|
Dealing with the Self |
True ministry
limits the
self |
True burden
breaks and disciplines the self |
|
Relationship with Prayer |
Prayer precedes
genuine speaking |
Burdened prayer
brings God’s speaking |
|
Relationship with Fasting |
Sometimes
fasting is needed to seek God’s mind |
Fasting often
accompanies deep burden |
|
Mutual Relationship |
Ministry is the
outlet |
Burden is the
content and driving force |
|
Spiritual Sequence |
First burden,
then speaking |
Burden produces
powerful ministry |
|
Without the Other |
Ministry
without burden = empty preaching |
Burden without
speaking =
unable to release |
|
Example — The Lord Jesus |
Spoke with
authority
(Matt. 7:28-29) |
Wept over
Jerusalem (Luke 19:41) |
|
Example — Paul |
Supplied the
churches through his epistles |
Bore daily
concern for the churches (2 Cor. 11:28) |
|
Example — The Prophets |
Spoke for God |
“Oracle/burden”
in the Old Testament implies a burden (Isa. 13:1) |
|
Example — Watchman Nee |
His gospel
messages were powerful |
Fasted and
prayed before gospel meetings |
|
Example — Peace Wang |
Her messages
carried spiritual impact |
She wept long
before God for souls |
|
Application — Pulpit Ministry |
Not merely preparing a complete message |
Seek for people
to be touched by God |
|
Application — Eldership |
Not merely arranging meetings |
Seek to turn
the church situation |
|
Application — Gospel Work |
Not merely delivering information |
Seek the
salvation of souls |
|
Application — Shepherding |
Not merely visiting people |
Seek genuine
growth in life |
|
Application — Prayer |
Not merely formal prayer |
Prayer with
weeping, warfare, and urgency |
|
Application — Young People’s Work |
Not merely organizing activities |
Gain young
people for the Lord |
|
Expression of Burden |
Inward
inability to remain at peace |
Restlessness,
urgency, inability to sleep or eat peacefully |
|
Expression without Burden |
Preach and then forget |
Results do not matter |
|
Spiritual Principle |
God’s speaking
carries God’s feeling |
God’s burden
carries God’s heart |
|
Spiritual Result |
Produces life
supply |
Produces
spiritual impact |
|
Need in the Church |
A ministry that
supplies life |
People willing
to bear the cross for the church |
|
Prophetic Guidance |
“Lord, what do
You want to say to these people today?” |
“Lord, what do
You want to gain in these people today?” |
|
Spiritual Discernment |
Doctrine does not equal ministry |
Zeal does not equal burden |
|
Ultimate Goal |
Building up the
Body of Christ |
Accomplishing
God’s eternal economy |
|
Conclusion |
True ministry
is not
a display of knowledge, but God’s present speaking |
True burden is
not maintaining responsibility, but carrying God’s desire until it is
fulfilled |
