Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, for They Shall Be Comforted (Matthew 5:4)

Matthew 5:4 – “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

Aspect

Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, for They Shall Be Comforted (Matthew 5:4)

Meaning

Mourningspiritually means feeling deep sorrow and repentance because God’s will is hindered, His glory is dishonored, the church is desolate, and mankind has turned away from Him. It is not a natural sadness but a divine emotion that comes from loving God and being sensitive to His heart.

Reason

1. The world’s condition is negative toward God’s economy—sin, darkness, and Satan rule over men.
2. God’s glory is insulted, Christ is rejected, the Spirit is resisted.
3. The church is desolate, the self is corrupted, and the world is evil.
4. The poor in spirit, seeking God, are enlightened to see man’s rebellion and thus mourn.

Result

1. Those who mourn will be comfortedGod Himself becomes their comfort (Matt. 5:4).
2. Present comfortthrough experiencing God’s presence, shepherding, and rule (Rev. 7:17).
3. Eternal comfortin the kingdom and in eternity, they will be fully satisfied and glorified (Rev. 21:3–4).

Explanation

This mourning is not caused by self-pity or outward suffering but by a spiritual vision: seeing that men reject God and the church fails to express Him. Such mourning is noble, holy, and heavenly—it aligns our heart with God’s heart and brings divine comfort and renewal.

Examples

1. Jesus wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41–44).
2. Nehemiah fasted and wept for the desolation of Jerusalem (Neh. 1:4).
3. Paul wept over believers’ sin (Phil. 3:18).
4. Spiritual believers throughout history have mourned and prayed for the church’s recovery.

Application

1. Allow God’s light to expose sin and corruption.
2. Learn to mourn for God’s will and glory, producing spiritual intercession.
3. Experience God’s shepherding, comfort, and renewal in mourning.
4. Mourn with hope, looking to the coming kingdom and restoration.
