God’s Sons |
God’s Israel |
Key Points of Integration |
|
Core definition |
Those who,
through faith in Christ Jesus, are born of God and have God’s life and nature (Gal. 3:26; John 1:12-13) |
The true
Israelites, the spiritual Israel, which is the church, including all
believers in Christ, both Gentile and Jewish (Gal. 6:16;
Rom. 9:6b; 2:28-29; Phil. 3:3) |
The same group
of people, called by two names from two angles: sonship emphasizes life, Israel
emphasizes authority and function |
|
Main emphasis |
Life, nature,
and image (birth and growth) |
Authority,
administration, and kingdom (representing and ruling) |
Life comes
first,
then authority; life is the basis of authority |
|
Basis of becoming |
By faith in
Christ, regeneration by God, and receiving the sonship (Gal. 3:26;
4:4-6; Eph. 1:5) |
In Christ,
being the true seed of Abraham and part of the new creation
(Gal. 3:7, 29; 6:15-16) |
Both are “in
Christ,” not
based on flesh, bloodline, or outward conditions |
|
Relationship with God the Father |
An organic
relationship of Father and sons; the Spirit of the Son in our hearts
cries, “Abba, Father” (Gal. 4:6) |
God’s people,
the citizens and stewards of God’s kingdom (Gal.
6:10; Matt. 16:18) |
Sonship is a
relationship of the household,
Israel a relationship of the kingdom:
first the family, then the kingdom |
|
Work of the Spirit |
God sent the
Spirit of His Son into our hearts so that we may live out our
sonship (Gal. 4:6; Rom. 8:14-16) |
Serving God in
the spirit (Phil. 3:3) and exercising God’s authority by
the Spirit |
The Spirit is
the common reality of both aspects, imparting life as well as power and authority |
|
Correspondence to Genesis 1:26 |
Corresponds to
“in the image of God”:
expressing God |
Corresponds to
“have dominion”: representing God and exercising authority |
God’s purpose
in creating man has both sides: image for expression, dominion for
representation (Gen. 1:26, 28) |
|
Function toward God |
To express God (being sons of God to
express God) |
To represent God (exercising His
authority and carrying out His administration on earth) |
Expression is
the inner God being lived out; representation is the outer God being executed |
|
Destiny in the economy |
To be conformed
to the image of the Firstborn, as the many sons of God
sharing His glory (Rom. 8:29; Heb. 2:10) |
To be kings
reigning in God’s kingdom (Rev. 5:10; 22:5b) |
Two sides of
our destiny: to be like the Firstborn and to reign with the
Firstborn |
|
Reality in the overcomers |
The overcomers
inherit all things; God will be their God and they will be His sons (Rev. 21:7) |
The man-child
is caught up to God, and the overcomers fight with authority (Rev. 12:5, 7-11; Luke
10:19) |
Revelation
applies both aspects to the overcomers: the status of sons plus the reigning of kings |
|
Transformation of humanity |
God’s nature
grows in us, making us gradually like the Firstborn |
As Jacob was
changed into Israel (Gen. 32:28), the natural man is transformed
into one who can reign for God |
Both require
growth
and transformation in life, not merely an
outward title |
|
Corporate significance |
Many brothers;
the church is God’s household, the household of the faith (Gal. 6:10; Rom. 8:29) |
The church is
God’s Israel, the corporate kingdom |
Sons are the
many brothers corporately; Israel is the kingdom corporately; both are in the church |
|
Relationship with the Triune God |
Born of the
Father, in the Son, and lived out by the Spirit; those who are in
the Triune God (Matt. 28:19; Gal. 4:4-6) |
God’s Israel is
the church in the processed Triune God (1 Thes. 1:1; 2 Cor. 13:14) |
Both are based
on being in the processed Triune God: by enjoying Him in Him, we can express
Him
and represent Him |
|
Practical emphasis |
Following the
Spirit’s leading, letting Christ’s life grow in us, and living out God’s nature |
Serving in the
spirit, standing under God’s authority and administration in the
church life, and coordinating to fight and
reign for God |
Living out the
life of sons qualifies us to exercise the authority of Israel |
One-Sentence
Integration
God’s sons are
our “status of life,” enabling us to express God; God’s Israel is our “function
of authority,” enabling us to represent God. We become sons by being born of
God, and we become God’s
Israel by being the church in the Triune God, with the ultimate goal of
expressing God and reigning for Him to fulfill
His purpose.
The
Relationship in Three Levels
1. The foundation of life: Becoming God’s sons through regeneration (Gal. 3:26; John 1:12-13).
2. The extension of identity: The sons corporately constitute
God’s household and also God’s Israel, which is
the church (Gal. 6:10, 16).
3. The completion of the economy: The sons who
express God are at the same time the kings who reign in God’s
kingdom (Rev. 21:7; 5:10).
