From Song of Songs: Believers Should Be Lovely and Also Fearsome

In the Song of Songs, we see that Christ’s overcoming lover becomes “beautiful as Tirzah” and “lovely as Jerusalem”; yet toward the enemy she is “terrible as an army with banners” (S. S. 6:4, 10).

Here, “fearsome” does not mean harsh, aggressive, or frightening in a natural sense. It refers to spiritual awe-inspiring power and victorious authority, by which Christ’s victory is manifested in His people and the enemy is intimidated.

Integrated Comparison Table

Aspect of Comparison

Believers Should Be Lovely — Before Christ

Believers Should Also Be Fearsome — Before the Enemy

Spiritual Relationship Between the Two

Key verses

“You are beautiful as Tirzah, my love, lovely as Jerusalem.” — S. S. 6:4

“Terrible as an army with banners.” — S. S. 6:4; 6:10

The same person is a lover before Christ and an army before the enemy.

Meaning of “lovely”

Beautiful, lovely, pleasant,

and pleasing to the Lord

Inner beauty produces outward spiritual dignity and victory. These are not two different lives but two aspects of the same Christ-life.

Spiritual identity

Christ’s lover, beloved by Christ and pleasing to Him

An overcoming believer as a member of Christ’s Body and a corporate warrior

The more the lover loves, enjoys, and is filled with Christ, the more she is able to stand in spiritual warfare.

Toward whom?

Primarily toward Christ

Primarily toward Satan and the spiritual enemy

We are simultaneously the object of Christ’s love and an opponent of the enemy.

Symbol

Tirzah and Jerusalem

An army with banners

Both are corporate symbols: one emphasizes beauty and building, the other warfare and victory.

Tirzah

Signifies the beauty and pleasantness of the lover

The believer should not merely have power or gifts but should have Christ as life expressed in spiritual beauty.

Jerusalem

Lovely, complete, established, and possessing the character of a city

A built-up city becomes a testimony of God and something feared by the enemy

Beauty is related to building; spiritual maturity is not merely individual but reaches the Body and the building.

Like the heavenly city

Displays heavenly beauty and loveliness before the Lord

Displays spiritual firmness and strength before the enemy

A heavenly living produces spiritual steadfastness.

Like the sanctuary

Quietness, holiness, and the presence of God

Because God dwells there, it possesses spiritual dignity and authority

True meekness is not weakness; divine strength is contained within spiritual quietness.

Spiritual condition

Beautiful as the moon and bright as the sun

Terrible as an army with banners

S. S. 6:10 links beauty → brightness → victory.

Source of life

Christ Himself as life within the believer

The same Christ as victorious life manifested in the Body

We do not become lovely or fearsome by ourselves; we live Christ.

Characteristics of life

Loving the Lord, enjoying Him, being joined to Him, and obeying Him

Trusting the Lord, standing firm, resisting the enemy, and fighting the spiritual battle

Love and warfare are not opposites; the deeper our love for the Lord, the more firmly we can stand for Him.

Result of maturity

Becoming a fully matured lover whom Christ treasures

Becoming an “army with banners”

Individual maturity leads to corporate building, and corporate building produces corporate victory.

Song of Songs 3:7–8

Solomon’s bed was surrounded

by sixty mighty men, warriors of Israel,

carrying swords and skilled in warfare

This picture shows that the King’s move involves protection, warfare, and victory; the mighty men provide a background for the mature lover’s corporate warrior aspect.

Why be lovely?

Because the Lord desires not merely gifted or active people but lovers who love Him, enjoy Him, and correspond to Him—

The goal of God’s economy is to gain the Bride; the Bride must possess the beauty of life.

Why be fearsome?

Because God’s enemy opposes God’s economy, Christ, and the church

As the Bride matures, she becomes not merely one who is loved by Christ but also God’s corporate expression and victorious testimony in the universe.

What does the enemy fear?

Not merely the natural courage of individual believers,

but the built-up Body of Christ

Ephesians 6 shows that spiritual warfare is against spiritual forces; therefore the believers must put on the whole armor of God and stand.

Individual vs. corporate

An individual believer can enjoy Christ, love Christ, and pursue growth in life

The corporate Body manifests the reality of an army

Individual life → Body life → corporate warfare

Building of the church

Jerusalem signifies the built-up church

The completed city becomes a testimony feared by the enemy

When Jerusalem’s wall was completed in Nehemiah 6, the surrounding enemies were afraid because they perceived that the work was accomplished by God.

Nature of the warfare

Not fighting for personal status, recognition, or superiority

Fighting for God’s purpose, God’s kingdom, and Christ’s Body

Genuine spiritual warfare is centered on God’s economy, not human interests.

The banners

A banner signifies identity, allegiance, position, and testimony

To have banners displayed means to stand openly on the side of Christ’s victory.

When loveliness is lost

Losing the first love, enjoyment of Christ, and fellowship with Him causes spiritual beauty to fade

At the same time, the ability to resist and stand against the enemy is weakened

When we lose our loveliness before the Lord, we often also lose our fearsome testimony before the enemy.

When fearsome victory is lost

A believer may still have outward religious activities but lack the reality of life

There is little spiritual position, strength, or corporate coordination in warfare

Spiritual authority does not come from natural personality but from Christ manifested in His Body.

Way of recovery

Return to the Lord, recover the first love, and enjoy Christ as life

Return to the Body, live in coordination, stand, pray, and resist the enemy

Recover love → enjoy life → grow to maturity → be built into the Body → fight corporately

Ultimate goal

To become the beautiful Bride of Christ

To become Christ’s victorious army

The Bride and the army are not two different groups but two aspects of the mature Bride.

Final picture

The beauty of the Bride

The power and dignity of the army

Beautiful life + built-up Body + victorious standing = the manifestation of the mature Bride.

Spiritual formula

Love Christ → enjoy Christ → live Christ → express Christ’s beauty

Build up the Body → stand in the position → put on the armor → manifest Christ’s victory

Lovely through loving the Lord; fearsome through being built up. In life we are the Bride; in warfare we are the army.

The Spiritual Progression Revealed in the Song of Songs

The lover who loves the Lord
↓
Enjoying Christ as life
↓
Growing and maturing in life
↓
Beautiful as Tirzah, lovely as Jerusalem
↓
Passing from individual life to corporate building
↓
Becoming the Body of Christ
↓
Putting on the whole armor of God and standing
↓
Becoming an army with banners
↓
Causing the enemy to fear

Thus, Song of Songs 6:4 and 6:10 should be understood together. The lover does not first become “fearsome” by becoming naturally aggressive. Rather, as her life matures and she becomes built up, her beauty reaches such a degree that it is simultaneously manifested as spiritual dignity and victory.

Song of Songs 6:10 brings these aspects together:

Beautiful → Bright → Fearsome → Victorious

The beauty, brightness, and fearsome character are different aspects of one mature spiritual condition.

Two Crucial Balances

1. We cannot be only “lovely” without being “fearsome.”

Some believers genuinely love the Lord and are gentle, humble, and pursuing life. Yet if they lack Body life, building, standing, coordination, and spiritual warfare, they have not yet reached the mature condition portrayed in Song of Songs 6.

The mature lover is not merely one who is beautiful before the Lord; she eventually becomes an army with banners.

2. We cannot be only “fearsome” without being “lovely.”

Genuine victory does not mean natural harshness, contention, criticism, or control.

If we lose our love for the Lord and the beauty of the divine life, what we call “spiritual warfare” can easily become merely human zeal.

The army revealed in Song of Songs is first the lover. Her warfare proceeds from her love for and union with the King.

Therefore:

Love produces beauty;
life produces maturity;
maturity produces building;
building produces corporate warfare;
and corporate warfare manifests Christ’s victory.

The Deeper Relationship: Lover → City → Army

There is a significant progression in the imagery:

Lover
→ Beauty
→ Jerusalem
→ Building
→ Body
→ Army
→ Victory

This means that the spiritual goal is not merely to produce individually beautiful Christians. God's economy is moving toward a corporately built-up Bride.

Jerusalem represents the built-up corporate expression of God's people, while the army represents that same corporate entity in the aspect of spiritual warfare.

Therefore, the two sides can be summarized as:

Before Christ

Before the Enemy

Lover

Warrior

Beautiful

Fearsome

Lovely

Victorious

Enjoys Christ

Stands in Christ

Receives the King

Represents the King

Life

Warfare

Beauty

Authority

Bride

Army

Jerusalem

Army with banners

Built up

Fighting

Pleasing to Christ

Intimidating to the enemy

These are not two separate spiritual identities. They are two aspects of the same mature corporate person.

One-Sentence Ministry Summary

May we be Christ’s beautiful and lovely Bride before Him by enjoying Him, living Him, and growing in His life; and may we also become an army with banners in His Body through building, coordination, standing, and spiritual warfare, so that the enemy is intimidated by the corporate manifestation of Christ’s victory.

One-Sentence Prophecy

“Before Christ we are to be beautiful and lovely as Tirzah and Jerusalem; before the enemy we are to be terrible as an army with banners—lovely in life, built up in the Body, and victorious in spiritual warfare.”
