 A Spiritual Christian Must “Read” Three Things Every Day

A spiritual Christian, for the building up of the Body of Christ, must “read” three things every day: he needs to read the Bible; he needs to read the sense within him; and he also needs to read his environment and circumstances—that is, the people, matters, and things around him (Rom. 8:6; cf. Prov. 16:9).

The Word gives us direction; the Spirit gives us leading; the environment gives us exercise. These three cooperate to cause us to grow in life and be conformed to Christ.

III. Why Is the “Environment” Especially Important?

The fifth through seventh points you provided bring the matter of “reading the environment” to a particularly deep level.

1. The problem is often not the environment but our way of reading it

Our natural reaction is:

Bad environment → ask the Lord to change it → ask the Lord to change others.

But Romans 8 gives us another vision:

Environment comes → God causes all things to work together → we gain profit → we are conformed to the image of God's Son.

Therefore, a spiritual person does not merely ask:  “Lord, why did You allow this to happen?”

He learns to ask:  “Lord, through this situation, what are You seeking to work into me of Christ?”

This is reading the environment.

IV. Even Complaining Can Become Deep Prayer

The thought conveyed by the title of Psalm 102 is significant: our complaint can become an opening of our heart before God, and God can use such fellowship to accomplish His own work in us.
