The Process of Being Marked Out as Sons of God

Being Marked Out as God’s Sons vs. Passing through Death and Resurrection vs. Being Transformed in Life vs. Being Made God in Life and Nature

The four processes below should not be regarded as four separate works. They are four aspects of one divine-life process: the divine life enters our spirit, passes through death and resurrection, grows and transforms us, conforms us to Christ, and eventually causes us to be fully manifested as sons of God.

Death and resurrection are the way; growth and transformation are the process; being marked out as sons is the manifestation; being made God in life and nature is the consummation.

2. The Four Processes

① Being Marked Out as Sons of God

Christ is the prototype. He was:

David's seed according to the flesh → resurrection → designated the Son of God in power.

We follow the same principle:

Divine life enters us → resurrection operates in us → divine life grows → Christ is formed in us → we are progressively manifested as God's sons.

Therefore, “being marked out” is not merely an outward declaration. It refers to the progressive manifestation of the divine sonship life within us.

② Passing through Death and Resurrection

John 12:24 gives the central picture:

One grain → falls into the ground → dies → rises → bears many grains.

Thus:

Death is for resurrection; resurrection is for growth; growth is for transformation.

The cross deals with the natural man, while resurrection releases the divine life.

2 Corinthians 4:10–12, 16 shows the same principle:

The death of Jesus operates in us → the life of Jesus is manifested → the outer man is consumed → the inner man is renewed.

Therefore, suffering and dealings should not merely be viewed negatively. God uses them to give the divine life more opportunity to operate within us.

③ Being Transformed in Life

Transformation is not outward behavior modification. It is an inward metabolic change produced by the divine life.

Four major supplies are particularly important:

1.      Turning our heart to the Lord  2 Corinthians 3:16–18; Matthew 5:8.

2.      Being nourished by the Word  1 Peter 2:2; Hebrews 5:12–14.

3.      Receiving the supply of the Body through gifted members  1 Corinthians 3:6; John 7:37–39.

4.      Allowing circumstances and failures to expose and break down the self  Romans 8:28–29.

The spiritual pattern is:

Turn to the Lord → behold the Lord → receive the Word → receive the Body's supply → experience the cross → grow in life → be transformed.

④ Being Made God in Life and Nature

This expression must be understood carefully.

To be made God does not mean to become God in the Godhead.

Rather:

We become God in life and nature, but not in the Godhead.

Thus the goal is not that man becomes another independent God, but that the Triune God works Himself into His redeemed people so that they may express Him corporately in life and nature.

7. Ultimate Conclusion

The deepest significance of “David's seed became the Son of God” is not merely a doctrine concerning Christ's resurrection; it reveals a principle of God's eternal economy.

Christ is the Firstborn Son and the prototype; we are the many sons. Christ passed through death and resurrection and was designated the Son of God in power; we, having received the divine life, are now passing through the same process of death and resurrection. As this life grows within us, we are transformed and conformed to the image of Christ. Eventually, in resurrection and glorification, we will be fully manifested as God's sons.

Thus, being marked out as God's sons, passing through death and resurrection, being transformed in life, and being made God in life and nature are four aspects of one divine process of sonship.

The ultimate goal is not merely individual spiritual maturity, but:

the corporate expression of the Triune God in the Body of Christ, consummating in the New Jerusalem.
