Christ's
Shepherding vs. the Elders' Shepherding
Central
Thought
Christ is the
unique Great Shepherd, the Good Shepherd, the Chief Shepherd, and the Shepherd
and Overseer of the believers' souls. The elders do not replace Christ; rather, they represent Christ by shepherding God's flock in life,
according to God, and through the Spirit,
so that all the saints may grow up into Christ the
Head, for the building up of the Body of Christ and ultimately the consummation of the New Jerusalem.
|
Item |
Christ's
Shepherding |
The
Elders' Shepherding |
|
Meaning |
Christ
personally ministers Himself as life to His sheep, shepherding, feeding,
seeking, saving, and perfecting the flock. |
The elders
receive Christ's commission to represent Him in the local churches by
shepherding God's flock according to God. |
|
Reason |
God's eternal
intention is to bring people into the fellowship of life and build up the Body through shepherding. |
After His
ascension, Christ continues His earthly shepherding ministry through the
elders. |
|
Source of Life |
Christ Himself
is the Life, the Shepherd, and the pasture. |
The elders are not the source of life but merely channels through which life is supplied. |
|
Basis of Shepherding |
God's love,
God's life, and God's grace. |
The expression
of Christ's life rather than natural zeal or enthusiasm. |
|
Nature of Shepherding |
God Himself
shepherds His people directly. |
God shepherds
His people through human vessels. |
|
Figures |
The Good
Shepherd (John
10), the Great Shepherd (Heb. 13), the Chief Shepherd (1 Pet. 5), and the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls (1 Pet. 2). |
Shepherds among
the flock, stewards in God's household, and caretakers of the
lampstand. |
|
Explanation |
The Lord knows
every sheep, lays down His life for them, and leads them into the
pasture. |
Through
visitation, feeding, perfecting, intercession, and fellowship, the elders
bring the sheep to Christ rather than to themselves. |
|
Content of Shepherding |
Supplying life,
forgiving
sins, healing, restoring, leading, preserving, and
perfecting. |
Feeding with
the truth, caring for spiritual life, preserving fellowship, perfecting the
saints, and bringing them into coordination. |
|
Way of Working |
Shepherding
believers inwardly through the Spirit. |
Shepherding
through the Word, prayer, personal example, visitation, and fellowship. |
|
Pattern |
The Lord Jesus
washed the disciples' feet, sought the lost sheep, and charged Peter to feed His sheep. |
The elders
serve according to the Lord's example rather than taking the Lord's
place. |
|
Result |
The sheep
receive life and have it more abundantly. |
The flock grows
in a healthy way, and the church is built up. |
|
Purpose |
To gain one
flock, one Body, and one Bride. |
To cooperate
with Christ in fulfilling God's eternal economy. |
|
Relationship to the Flock |
The Lord is
their life; the sheep are members of His Body. |
The elders are
fellow slaves serving the flock, not masters over it. |
|
Relationship to God |
Christ fully
expresses the Father. |
The elders
express Christ rather than themselves. |
|
Source of Authority |
God Himself. |
Spiritual
authority granted by Christ. |
|
Way of Leading |
By the
attraction of life. |
By being
examples to the flock, not lording it over them (1 Pet. 5). |
|
Example (1) |
John 21: "Feed My lambs." |
Peter
shepherded the flock according to the Lord's commission. |
|
Example (2) |
Luke 15: Seeking the lost sheep. |
Paul admonished
the saints with tears day and night for three years (Acts 20). |
|
Example (3) |
Ezekiel 34: God Himself shepherds His flock. |
The Ephesian
elders were entrusted to shepherd God's flock (Acts 20). |
|
Present-day Application |
Receive the
Lord's shepherding daily in our spirit. |
The elders
shepherd the saints through home meetings, visitation, feeding,
companionship, and perfecting. |
|
Principle of Life |
Christ lives. |
The elders
allow Christ to live through them. |
|
Principle of Service |
Love, life, and grace. |
Shepherding in
love, supplying life, and feeding with the truth. |
|
Focus of the Work |
Gaining people,
shepherding people, and building people up. |
Perfecting
people, building people up, and joining them together in the Body. |
|
Spiritual Burden |
To bring every
sheep back to the Father's house. |
To present
every saint full-grown in Christ (Col. 1:28). |
|
Guidance for Prophesying |
Proclaim that
Christ is still shepherding His flock today as the Good Shepherd, the
Great Shepherd, the Chief Shepherd, and the Shepherd of our souls. |
Encourage the
elders not
to be rulers but examples; not to manage an
organization but to minister life; not to
build up their own work but to shepherd Christ's
flock. |
|
Ultimate Conclusion |
Christ is the
unique
and eternal Shepherd. The elders are
the extension and expression of Christ's shepherding. Genuine shepherding is
Christ shepherding people through men, ultimately resulting in the building
up of the Body of Christ and the consummation of the New Jerusalem. |
