Christ as the Son of Man, the High Priest — "Trimming the Wick"
vs. "Adding Fresh Oil"
Exodus 27:20 You shall command
the Israelites to bring you pure olive oil, pounded into a lamp, for you to
keep it burning.
Exodus 30:7 Aaron shall burn a
pleasing aroma on the altar, and every morning when he sets the lamps, he shall
burn it.
Exodus 30:8 And at twilight
when he lights the lamps, he shall also burn it, as a constant incense before the
Lord throughout the generations.
Revelation 1:12 I turned
around to see who was speaking to me, and when I turned, I saw seven golden
lampstands;
Revelation 1:13 And in the
middle of the lampstands was one who looked like a son of man, dressed in a long
robe that reached to his feet, and with a golden sash around his breast.
Revelation 2:1 You shall write to the angels of the church in Ephesus, saying, “This is what he says: He who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.”

Trimming
the Wick |
Adding
Fresh Oil |
|
Meaning |
Christ, in His
humanity, tenderly cares for the churches by removing everything that
hinders their shining. |
Christ, in His
divinity, nourishes the churches by continually supplying the
Spirit as the fresh oil. |
|
Reason |
A burned wick
becomes charred and prevents the lamp from giving a bright
light. |
Without a
continual supply of oil, even a trimmed wick cannot keep burning. |
|
Figure |
The priest
trimmed away the burned portion of the wick every morning (Exo.
30:7), signifying the Lord's cleansing and renewing work. |
The priest
added pure olive oil (Exo. 27:20), signifying the continual supply of the Spirit of life. |
|
Explanation |
Christ exposes
and removes religion, worldliness, compromise, false teachings, Jezebel,
lukewarmness, self-confidence, and every hindrance mentioned in Revelation
2–3. |
Christ supplies
Himself as the Tree of Life, the hidden manna, the morning star,
white garments, refined gold, and the Spirit
to strengthen the churches. |
|
Result |
Hindrances are removed, restoring a pure testimony. |
The churches
receive a fresh supply of life and shine brightly with the
Spirit. |
|
Purpose |
To restore the
churches as pure golden lampstands. |
To keep the
lampstands continually burning for God's testimony. |
|
Relationship |
The negative
aspect—cleansing and removing. |
The positive
aspect—supplying and nourishing. |
|
Complementary Function |
Removes the old and charred. |
Supplies the
fresh and living. Both are indispensable. |
|
Spiritual Principle |
The cross deals
with the natural life. |
Resurrection
imparts the divine life. |
|
Christ's Ministry |
The Son of Man,
as High Priest, trims the wick in His humanity. |
The Son of Man
girded with the golden girdle supplies divine life in His divinity. |
|
Examples |
Removing the synagogue of Satan,
religious concepts, worldliness, Jezebel, deadness, and lukewarmness. |
Supplying the
Tree of Life, hidden manna, white stone, morning star, throne, gold, white
garments,
and eye salve. |
|
Application |
Daily receive
the Lord's shining and allow Him to remove everything that frustrates
our testimony. |
Daily enjoy
Christ through prayer, the Word, calling on His name, and the Spirit's fresh
anointing. |
|
Ministry Burden |
The Lord's
recovery is not outward correction but continual trimming
for a brighter testimony. |
The Lord's
recovery is the continual dispensing of the processed and consummated Triune God as
the life-giving Spirit. |

Conclusion
|
Christ's heavenly priesthood has two inseparable aspects: in His
humanity He tenderly cares for the churches by trimming away everything that frustrates their shining; in
His divinity He continually nourishes them by supplying the fresh oil of the
all-inclusive, life-giving, sevenfold intensified Spirit. Through this
continual trimming and supplying, the
churches become today's shining golden lampstands, expressing Christ
corporately, and ultimately consummate in the
New Jerusalem—the eternal golden lampstand radiating God's glory forever. |
