Ephesians 1:13 Therefore, when you heard the truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, you were sealed in him with the promised Holy Spirit,

Ephesians 1:14 who is the bond of our inheritance, for the redemption of God’s purchased heritage and for the praise of his glory.

Item

Theme

The Holy Spirit as the seal and the pledge

The Holy Spirit as the ongoing sealing and pledging

Meaning

The Spirit Himself is given once for all as the seal and the pledge

The Spirit continually operates within us as sealing and pledging

Reason

Because we believed into Christ (Eph. 1:13)

For the redemption and maturity of God’s purchased possession (Eph. 1:14)

Metaphor

A seal marking ownership

Repeated anointing and permeating

Way

Once at believing

From spirit → soul → body

Function

Confirms ownership and guarantees inheritance

Produces sanctification, transformation, and maturity

Explanation

The Spirit enters our spirit as the living seal

The Spirit spreads within us through continual inward operation

Result

We are marked as belonging to God

God’s image is expressed in our whole being

Relationship

The seal is the foundation; the pledge is the guarantee

Sealing continues; pledging becomes experiential

Example

Assurance of salvation at conversion

Renewed mind, softened emotion, subdued will

Application

Stand on the fact of having been sealed

Cooperate with the Spirit’s inward spreading

Burden

Do not stop at doctrine

Advance unto full transformation

Prophesying Direction

We are eternally sealed by God

The Spirit is still sealing us unto full redemption

Conclusion

Salvation is secure; inheritance is guaranteed

Redemption of the body depends on the Spirit’s spreading

🔑 Core Summary

The seal and the pledge of the Holy Spirit are once-for-all facts accomplished at our believing;
the sealing
and the pledging of the Holy Spirit are lifelong processes carried out within us.

The seal declares God’s ownership,
and the pledge guarantees our inheritance;
the sealing spreads God’s image
into our mind, emotion, and will
until our whole being, including our body, is fully redeemed, resulting in the praise of God’s glory.
