Adam & Eve vs. Christ & Church

Adam & Eve vs. Christ & Church

Rom 5:14 But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who do not sin after the likeness of Adam’s transgression, who is a foreshadowing of Him who was to come.

Jn 3:29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices at the bridegroom’s voice with exceeding joy; so this joy of mine is fulfilled.

2 Cor 11:2 I am jealous over you with the jealousy of God, because I have betrothed you to one husband, to present a chaste virgin to Christ.

Eph 5:31 For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery, but I am speaking concerning Christ and the church.

Identity & Role

• Adam: First man, created in God's image

• Eve: Woman formed from Adam's rib

Adam is Eve's head and source

• Christ: Last Adam, the genuine universal Husband

• Church: Christ's bride, God's counterpart

Christ is the Church's Head and source of life

Correspondence between type and reality, Adam typifies Christ, Eve typifies the Church

Recognize Christ as the Church's Head, the Church as Christ's Body and bride

Rom. 5:14 "Adam is a type of Him who was to come"

John 3:29 "He who has the bride is the bridegroom"

2 Cor. 11:2 "present you as a chaste virgin to Christ"

Eph. 5:23 "Christ is the head of the church"

God's Need: Not Good Alone

• Gen. 2:18 "It is not good for man to be alone"

God would make a helper as Adam's counterpart

Adam was perfect but not complete

Though God is absolutely perfect, without the Church He is not complete

Christ needs the Church as His complement

Like a head needs a body, husband needs wife

Distinction between perfect and complete: perfect is essence, complete is relationship

Christians should recognize their importance in God's plan; God needs the Church to cooperate with Him

Gen. 2:18 "It is not good for man to be alone; I will make him a helper as his counterpart"

Eph. 1:23 "the church, which is His Body, the fullness of the One who fills all in all"

Process of Seeking a Counterpart

God brought every animal to Adam

Adam named the animals but found no counterpart

Animals had different life and nature from Adam

• Gen. 2:20 "no helper was found"

God seeks among all creation for those with the same life and nature

Only those regenerated with God's life can be Christ's counterpart

• Natural man cannot match God

Counterpart must be the same in life, nature, and expression

Believers need to be regenerated with God's life and partake of divine nature to be Christ's counterpart

Gen. 2:19-20 "brought them to Adam...no helper was found as his counterpart"

2 Pet. 1:4 "partakers of the divine nature"

John 1:12-13 "born of God"

Compatibility in Life

Eve came from Adam's rib

Same life as Adam

Same nature as Adam

Could express Adam's image

Church comes from Christ's life

Has Christ's resurrection life

Has divine nature

Expresses Christ's glory

True counterpart relationship is built on union of life, not external combination

Pursue growth in life, be like God in nature, express Christ in living

Gen. 2:21-23 "built the rib...into a woman"

1 Cor. 15:45 "The last Adam became a life-giving Spirit"

2 Cor. 3:18 "being transformed into the same image"

Dominion & Reigning

• Gen. 1:26 "let them have dominion"

Adam and Eve to rule creation together

Execute God's authority together

God wants a victorious Christ plus a victorious Church

Christ and Church reign together

Together overthrow Satan's work

God's plan is for Christ and Church to reign together, jointly executing God's authority

Believers pursue victory, reign with Christ, overcome sin and Satan in life

Gen. 1:26 "let them have dominion"

Rom. 5:17 "reign in life through Jesus Christ"

Rom. 16:20 "bruise Satan under your feet"

Eph. 1:22-23 "put all things in subjection under His feet"

Rev. 5:10 "reign on the earth"

Mystery of One Body

• Gen. 2:24 "become one flesh"

Establishment of marital union

Adam said "bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh"

Union of Christ and Church

• Eph. 5:32 "great mystery"

Christ and Church become one new man

Marriage was established by God to typify the mystery of Christ and Church's union

In church life pursue genuine union with Christ, not merely external religious activities

Gen. 2:24 "become one flesh"

Eph. 5:31-32 "great mystery...concerning Christ and the church"

Eph. 2:15 "create in Himself one new man"

Preparation of Counterpart

God prepared Eve for Adam

God caused deep sleep to fall on Adam

Took material from Adam to build Eve

God brought Eve to Adam

God prepares Church for Christ

Christ's death on the cross

Church produced from Christ's death and resurrection

Holy Spirit brings Church to Christ

God actively prepares the counterpart; counterpart is God's work, not human effort

Trust in God's preparation and work, let the Holy Spirit do transforming work in us

Gen. 2:21-22 "caused a deep sleep...brought her to the man"

John 19:34 "blood and water came out"

Eph. 5:25-27 "Christ loved the church...cleanse her by the washing of the water in the word"

Ultimate Goal

Adam and Eve's life in Eden

Rule over God's creation

Express God's image

Represent God's authority

New Jerusalem: the Lamb's bride

Reign with Christ forever

Fully express God's glory

Fulfill God's eternal purpose

God's eternal purpose is to gain a counterpart fully compatible with Christ

Prepare ourselves to be Christ's bride, await the Lord's coming and the Lamb's wedding feast

Rev. 19:7-9 "the marriage of the Lamb has come"

Rev. 21:2,9-11 "New Jerusalem...the Lamb's wife"

Rev. 22:5 "they will reign forever and ever"

Practical Distinctions

Is a type, shadow

• Material, temporal

• Earthly relationship

• Will pass away

• Is reality, substance

Spiritual, eternal

Heavenly relationship

Exists forever

Value of type is pointing to reality, helping us know spiritual actuality

Cannot stop at the type, must pursue spiritual reality and eternal relationship

Col. 2:17 "things which are a shadow of what is to come, but the substance belongs to Christ"

Heb. 10:1 "the Law has a shadow of the good things to come, not the very form of things"

Conclusion:

This comprehensive analysis reveals God's eternal plan: He desires not only to gain Christ, but also to obtain a Church that is fully compatible with Christ and can reign with Him forever and ever. This divine mystery begins its revelation in Genesis and finds its complete fulfillment in Revelation. The type of Adam and Eve helps us understand that God's ultimate goal is to gain a victorious Christ plus a victorious Church, a Christ who overcomes Satan's work plus a Church that overthrows Satan's work, a reigning Christ and a reigning Church.
